Nairobi, Kenya

has over 3 million people (10% of Kenya's population and 3 times larger than the total number of Swazis).  It sprawls over many miles
with the sophistication of any major city in the world, consisting of the same contrasts of poverty, traffic, and danger vs. modern buildings, neighborhoods, and food.

NEW BELOW:  Inside our new apartment as of June 1st and just outside Nairobi the Kitengela glass factory, both little havens
that could be anywhere in the U.S. or Europe...

Our apartment since June 1st has been much improved from our earlier one(s).  We've been decorating the walls with local prints.
(Above L to R) Both sides of our living room, our hallway leading to 2 bedrooms and bathroom, then our kitchen.

Kitengela Glass Factory just outside Nairobi creates glassware,
stained glass and mosaic sculptures out of recycled glass.
(Above Far L) Inside the shop and then (Above L) wandering
outside along a path into the woods.  The pool (Above R),
whimsical wall decorations (Above Far R), and delightful
sculptures ( this row L & R).

Nairobi is notorious for traffic jams but during rush hour (Top Far L) police do try to control the chaos (note the gap in cars).  There are
unique African flavors to Nairobi's traffic (Above L): people dart across the road when they feel like it and carved giraffes supervise the craziness.
Sarit Centre  (Above R) is one of the city's high end shopping malls.  It's in the Westlands area where the TechnoServe office is located and
where we live in one of the many apartment buildings. Sarit and others like it could be in any U.S.city, with similar stores and facilities (Above R).

BELOW IS OUR APARTMENT IN NAIROBI FROM JAN. TO MAY 2007
(Far L) Our apartment complex is secured by a high wall topped with rings of barbed wire and an electric wire fence with a 24/7 guard at the iron-bar gate.
But once inside, the complex is safe with amenities such as a pool, gym, and Chinese restaurant.  (Top L) View of our old complex's courtyard.
(Top R) Our old spacious dining / living room.  (Far R) Construction site next to our old building.  I'm trying not to think about ours being built of twigs as well...
